Finding the Good

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
~ Dr. Wayne Dyer

Ever have those days where you start off frustrated and the rest of the day goes further downhill?  It’s as if your mood actually propels you into a spiral of negative events.

When we allow external circumstances to determine our state of mind, we give up our power.  Our mood becomes dictated by everything and everyone else but us.  But when we see things from a positive perspective, it’s a bit easier to weather life’s storms.  (Kind of like a tree with strong, well-nourished roots – often able to thrive after inclement weather).

Finding the good is not about denying the challenging realities that exist, or simply skipping through life while humming a happy tune.  It’s about making the conscious choice to look for the good in all situations.

Some days that’s easy, when all seems “right” in our lives.  On our darker days, though, the good may be hidden in a fog of stress, grief, pain or frustration.  Those days we must dig deep to find the faintest sliver of light.

Good takes many forms.  Some aren’t easy to recognize or accept when you’re in the thick of a situation:

  • a difficult learning opportunity
  • personal growth through mistakes
  • having to choose a tough path because it’s the right one
  • needing to let go of a relationship that isn’t positive
  • the opportunity to work hard at a relationship that’s worth fighting for
  • the chance to really understand someone else’s perspective
  • the opportunity to find out who your true friends are
  • an unwanted life change that leads to a more positive situation
  • a wake-up call giving you a chance to live, love and laugh another day.

I have a couple of dear friends who are burdened with chronic pain.  Every single day is difficult for them as they face challenges many people couldn’t even imagine.  But both somehow feel fortunate, so grateful for the positive things in their lives.

On the darkest of days, maybe the good is in our potential: the chance to get up, call the darkness what it is, and make our way – crawling, if necessary – to the sliver of light.  To rise above our challenges and grow, change or alter our perspective.
